The Interaction between Final Lengthening Andaccentual Lengthening: Dutch versus English
نویسنده
چکیده
Based on results from previous experiments, the hypothesis is are given, with accented syllables in capitals and the relevant tested that there is an interaction between final lengthening and material underlined: accentual lengthening in Dutch, but not in English. To this end, a production experiment was run for both languages with accented (1) a. English and unaccented words in three positions in the phrase. The results I said ‘BAKE enforce’, not ‘BANK enforce’. confirm the above hypothesis. Furthermore, the distribution of I said ‘bake enFORCE’, not ‘bake reMORSE’. final lengthening and accentual lengthening in disyllabic words b. Dutch with initial stress is investigated. To avoid an interaction between Ik zei ‘PANda masten’, niet ‘HINde masten’. accentual lengthening and final lengthening, Dutch speakers could ‘I said panda masts, not hind masts’ realize the former on the first syllable and the latter on the second. Ik zei ‘panda MASten’, niet ‘panda POORten’. Instead, however, there is a lack of accentual lengthening in final ‘I said panda masts, not panda gateways’ position in disyllabic words as much as in monosyllabic words.

Evaluation of Cinical and Radiological Results of Calcaneal Lengthening Osteotomy in Pediatric Idiopathic Flexible Flatfoot
Abstract: Background: Flexible idiopathic flatfoot is the most common form of flatfoot. First line treatments are parental reassurance and conservative measures. However, surgical treatment may be needed in some cases. A number of surgical techniques with varying results have been described in the literature. Here, we present our clinical and radiological outcomes of calcaneal lengthening osteo...
متن کاملCross-language differences in cue use for speech segmentation.
Two artificial-language learning experiments directly compared English, French, and Dutch listeners' use of suprasegmental cues for continuous-speech segmentation. In both experiments, listeners heard unbroken sequences of consonant-vowel syllables, composed of recurring three- and four-syllable "words." These words were demarcated by (a) no cue other than transitional probabilities induced by ...

Durational contrasts can be used to signal prosodic boundaries (utterance-final lengthening) and discourse focus (accentual lengthening). Durational differences can also signal phonemic vowel length contrast such as in non-rhotic Australian English where vowel length distinguishes lexical items (such as, cart /k :t/ and cut /k t/). This raises the question of how and when children acquire phone...
متن کاملA Cross-linguistic Study on Discourse and Syntactic Boundary Cues in Spontaneous Speech: Using Duration as an Example
This study focuses on the acoustic-phonetic cues at discourse and syntactic boundaries in English, Guoyu, Putonghua, and Japanese. Speech was elicited by having talkers describe the events in The Pear Story film. Recorded data were transcribed and segmented into discourse and syntactic units. Acousticphonetic measurements of syllable duration and syllable onset intervals (SOIs) were taken on th...

Background: Open hamstring lengthening (oHSL) is commonly performed to decrease knee contracture and improvegait and posture for children with spastic diplegia. Furthermore, percutaneous hamstring lengthening (pHSL) is alsogaining popularity as an alternative to the open approach. This study aimed to compare the results of pHSL versusoHSL and to determine the efficacy and safe...
